California Through a Mediterranean Lens

Same latitude, same light, same olive trees. Why the architecture of Spain and Portugal feels at home here.

Rosebend Design Team8 minute read

California and the Iberian Peninsula share a latitude, a climate, and much of a plant palette. The missions, the Spanish Colonial Revival of Santa Barbara, and the courtyard houses of the 1920s all drew on the same deep well.

A living tradition

Rosebend does not set out to replicate the past. We want to continue a living tradition, using Spanish and Portuguese principles with contemporary plans, materials, and performance.

The result should feel neither historic nor generic, but specific to this place.
