Why Courtyards Matter

The oldest idea in Mediterranean architecture may be the most modern idea for California living.

Walk through the old quarters of Córdoba in May and you will see doors left ajar onto patios brimming with geraniums, citrus, and the sound of water. The courtyard is the private heart of the Andalusian house: an outdoor room, open to the sky, protected from the street.

For centuries the courtyard solved real problems. It pulled cool air through the house, gave every room light and a view, and created a place for family life that was outdoors yet private.

A room without a roof

At Rosebend, we think of the courtyard as a room without a roof. It might be a single home's patio with an olive tree and a bench, or a shared neighborhood court where children play within sight of a dozen kitchens.

“Every room should know where the light comes from.”

California's climate is uniquely suited to this way of living. The courtyard brings the garden to the center of daily life, which is exactly where it belongs.
